7 Products for Beginners

Wilton Color Right System

The first of our products for beginners is a good set of color dyes. Now this color right system is by far my favorite and I will be hard pressed to use anything else. These dyes come in bottles that dispense the same amount of dye with every drop so that you can always mix the same colors and shades. If that wasn’t cool enough, they are the only dyes I have found that will NOT change the flavor the icing. This means you can get really dark black, or really bright red, without color dye bitterness destroying your icing.

Starter Pack Essentials Kit

The next of our products for beginners is literally a starter pack. This kit is a good starter set for all the basic tools you’ll need! It contains piping bags, basic icing tips, a spatula, paint brush, and more.

Icing Smoothers

Next up on our products for beginners journey… smoother! Icing smoothers are ESSENTIAL! I like these flexible plastic smoothers a lot better then the metal ones because the metal ones tend to push too far into the cake and don’t mold around your shapes. This it includes smoothers that have patterns as well for a little extra style!

Turntable

Ohhhh how the turntables…

Our products for beginners list would not be complete without a turntable. A turntable is essential because it allows you to keep your hand and arm steady and move the cake to your desired position. This allows for neater designs and piping since you do not have to stop, reposition, and restart. The metal turn table above is great for beginners, but it’s simple. It does what it needs to do and nothing more.

Now if you want something a little more fancy, I suggest this:

This turntable does everything the more basic version does and more. It has a grippy surface so that the board and cake are less likely to slide, as well as tilts in all directions. This makes it easier to access the top of the cake without messing up the sides or having to lean over and getting your sleeve in the frosting!

Cake Boards

What use is it making a cake if it is stuck on your turntable or counter? That’s why I’ve included these cake boards on the products for beginners list. They aren’t anything special, just a board for the cake to sit on, but it allows the cake to be moved and transported. I was the queen of improvisation when it came to cakes, but sometimes the simplest solution is the best. Just get the cardboard.

Cake Pans

Next up… cake pans! Every baker needs a good set of cake pans, which is why I had to include them on this list. I’ve found in my career that round pans are the most universal, but you can go crazy buying all sorts of pans. However if we are thinking about essentials for someone just starting their journey, we can stick with the basics.

Caddy

Now that you have all of your tools, you need a place to store them! I recommend getting a caddy of some kind. These cake decorating caddy’s have special holders and slots for your oddly shaped and small tools, like your decorating tips. It also helps keep everything nice and organized so that you don’t go crazy looking for that one specialized decorating tip or coupler. There are larger caddy’s out there for sure, but when you are just starting out there’s no need to break the bank on a decorating suitcase.
